In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have to plan to leave our homes and our lives to find a safe place to live. We want people to thrive, and picking up and moving isn’t always the right answer. But sometimes that isn’t feasible. We will be developing this page to evaluate whether each state is a safe place to live, a place you might need to leave, or somewhere ideal to move to. In the meantime, we’ve got some good info for you from independent transgender journalist and activist Erin Reed.
One of the best sources for news on trans rights in the US is Erin Reed and her website erininthemorning.com. One of the amazing things she periodically posts is a color-coded map of the U.S. with assessed risk per state. This is the most recent version from December 11, 2024 (see her blog post for more info), with the legend below the map:
