Surviving and Advocating in Oklahoma

The State of Oklahoma

Oklahoma is a red state with some of the worst anti-trans laws affecting both adults and youth in the country. Erin in the Morning gives it a risk level of very high in terms of current and likely legislation over the next two years.

Resources

The organization Freedom Oklahoma is the state’s main organization that focuses on rights for trans and 2SLGBTQ+ people in general. They make a special callout to their commitment to the many sovereign tribal nations that are based in Oklahoma, as well. Their focus is safety for 2SLGBTQ+ people. They work to advocate against anti-2SLGBTQ+ legislation and also have community programs to educate. They also have a great list of resources, some local and some national. One of the things the group is doing is keeping track of violations of 2SLGBTQ+ people’s rights in Oklahoma, so they have several places on the site inviting you to share your discrimination experiences (for instance with health care, employment, and hiring). They also collaborate with other organizations in legal battles, and they are often looking for more people to be plaintiffs in some of these cases. See their events page for ongoing workshops and more.
