About

What is Red State Refugees

The political climate in the U.S. right now is not only unwelcoming to trans and nonbinary people, but can even be dangerous in many places, especially for young people. With Trump’s second term, the situation is going to get only worse. With even mundane things like public bathroom access under attack in many states, it’s going to be increasingly hard to be a trans or nonbinary person in the United States.

The founders of Red State Refugees know that the bully legislators in many red states have no qualms about driving trans and nonbinary people to self-harm or even suicide. They literally want us to go away. For some people, moving away from where they live is likely the safest path. But that is not always easy to do.

Red State Refugees believes that everyone deserves to be safe, including people who aren’t cis. Our goal is to help trans and nonbinary people move from unsafe places in the U.S. to more welcoming places. But we also want to help those who aren’t willing or able to move. We will be providing resources for trans and nonbinary people and families looking to move to bluer pastures as well as for people wanting to advocate for rights for those in unwelcoming places.

Right now, we’re looking for volunteers to help to build out this site. If you’d like to get involved, let us know here.

If you would like to help with the costs of running the site and being able to pay writers in the future, we don’t yet have a system set up for that yet. Let us know through the contact form that you’re interested and we’ll prioritize getting that sorted.
